Douro Eagle Superior Red 2018/19, Douro

If you haven’t tried a Portuguese red before, let this be your first port of call. It’s made by two of the country’s most acclaimed winemakers, J Portugal Ramos and José Maria Soares Franco, so you’re in good hands. In the UK, the Douro Valley is only renowned for fortified port wine but thanks to winemakers like this pair, the region’s still wines are becoming known as a source of excellent value, full-bodied reds. This traditional blend is named after the native Bonelli’s Eagle that nest amongst their vines, and it’s as powerful as the name suggests. If you love Australian Shiraz, this makes a great alternative choice. Bold and structured, its notes of ripe black fruits, pepper and spice will pair brilliantly with a rich meaty stew. The 2019 vintage won an IWC award in 2022.
